Where to eat in Cannes: a local's restaurant guide

The restaurants we actually go to. Not the tourist traps on the Croisette.

The number one mistake in Cannes is eating on the Croisette. The seafront restaurants serve 22-euro salads, factory pizzas at 18 euros, and soulless "international" menus. The view is beautiful - the food is not. The real restaurants are in the backstreets: Rue du 24 Aout, Rue Meynadier, the Suquet quarter, and the hidden squares. That is where locals have eaten for generations.

Best budget restaurants in Cannes

To eat well in Cannes for 12 to 20 euros per person, these are the addresses that hold up year after year. Not fleeting discoveries - these are local institutions.

🍝 Da Laura - Rue du 24 Aout

A Cannes institution since 1992. Anna prepares fresh pasta every morning in her open kitchen. The truffle tagliatelle, the gorgonzola gnocchi, the ricotta-spinach ravioli - everything is handmade. The room is small (30 seats), noisy, and always full. Book ahead or arrive at opening. Cash only.

Pasta 12 - 16 euros. Closed Sunday. Cash only. Booking recommended.

🍲 Aux Bons Enfants - Le Suquet

The oldest table in the Suquet. No website, no credit cards, no English menu. The owner cooks like her grandmother: pieds-paquets, Provencal daube, pistou soup, vegetable tian. The daily menu changes with the market. Family atmosphere, tight tables, absolute authenticity.

Menu ~18 euros. Cash only. No reservations.

🍕 Chez Vincent et Nicolas - Meynadier area

The quintessential Cannes pizza. Thin crust, fresh ingredients, perfect bake. The margherita at 10 euros is impeccable, the calzone at 14 euros is generous. Simple setting, fast service, and always busy - a sign that it is good.

Pizzas 10 - 14 euros. Open lunch and dinner.

Special dinner without breaking the bank

🍷 Table 22 - Le Suquet

The chef trained under Ducasse before opening his own table in the Suquet. Creative cuisine, market produce, elegant presentations. The tasting menu at 35 to 45 euros offers exceptional value for this level. The terrace on the little square is magical in summer. Book well ahead.

Menu 35 - 45 euros. Reservation essential.

⭐ Mantel - Rue Saint-Antoine

Noel Mantel, a former Michelin-starred chef, offers refined Provencal cuisine. The lunch menu (formule dejeuner) runs about 30 euros - the best way to taste cooking at this level without blowing the budget. In the evening, expect 45 to 65 euros. Desserts are remarkable.

Lunch ~30 euros, dinner 45 - 65 euros.

Restaurants to avoid in Cannes

A few warning signs to spot a tourist trap. Avoid restaurants that display photos of their dishes outside - always a bad sign. Menus translated into 6 languages with "international" dishes (burger, pasta, curry) indicate a kitchen with no identity. Restaurants in the front row on the Croisette charge for the view, not the quality. A simple rule: if a waiter approaches you in the street to invite you in, walk away. Good restaurants in Cannes do not need to recruit from the pavement - they are already full.

💡 Tip: the lunch formula

Almost every restaurant in Cannes offers a formule du midi (starter + main, or main + dessert) for 15 to 25 euros - that is 30 to 50% cheaper than dinner. Same quality, same portions. It is the best way to test a high-end restaurant without breaking the bank. Table 22 at 35 euros for lunch would be 55 euros at dinner. Mantel at 30 euros for lunch would be 50 euros. Have your best meals at lunch.
