Cannes on a budget - the complete guide
Free beaches, restaurants for 15 euros, activities that cost nothing. Cannes is far more affordable than you think.
Cannes has a reputation for luxury. Palaces, yachts, jewellery shops - the image sticks. But locals do not spend 200 euros a day to enjoy their city. They know the free beaches, the restaurants where you eat well for 15 euros, and the dozens of activities that cost nothing. This guide shares exactly those addresses and tips.
How much does a day in Cannes cost?
A full day in Cannes can cost between 30 and 40 euros per person. The breakdown: a return bus ticket costs 3 euros (1.50 euros per trip), or nothing if you are within walking distance. Lunch at a good local restaurant costs 12 to 15 euros. The beach is free. A terrace coffee costs 2 to 3 euros. Dinner at a decent restaurant costs 18 to 25 euros. Add an artisanal gelato at 3.50 euros and a happy hour beer at 5 euros, and you have a full day without deprivation for under 45 euros.
Are the beaches in Cannes free?
Yes. The public beaches in Cannes are entirely free and open to everyone. The sand is exactly the same as the private beaches - it is the same bay. The difference? Private beaches charge 25 to 40 euros for a sunbed, plus drinks. Public beaches offer the same panorama, the same turquoise water, and the same sun. Plage Zamenhof, Plage du Midi, and the Bocca beaches are the most spacious. In summer, arrive before 10am for a good spot.
Where to eat in Cannes for under 20 euros
๐ Da Laura - Rue du 24 Aout
Handmade fresh pasta since 1992. The pesto tagliatelle is a Cannes classic. Expect 12 to 16 euros for a generous plate of pasta. Book ahead, especially in summer - the dining room is small and always full.
๐ฒ Socca at Marche Forville
Socca is the quintessential Nicois specialty: a chickpea flour flatbread cooked on a wood fire. At Marche Forville, a portion costs 3 euros. Add a pan bagnat (6 - 8 euros) and you have a complete local lunch for under 10 euros.
The picnic strategy
๐งช Local tip: the market-to-beach formula
The best formula in Cannes is market plus beach. Go to Marche Forville in the morning: tomatoes, mozzarella, peaches, fresh bread, a portion of socca. Budget: 10 to 15 euros for two. Set yourself up on a public beach with your feast. It is the best meal in Cannes - and the cheapest. Locals do this every summer weekend.
Is Ile Sainte-Marguerite expensive?
The return ferry to Ile Sainte-Marguerite costs 18.50 euros (departs from the Vieux Port, 15-minute crossing). That is the only cost for the day. Once on the island, everything is free: the wild beaches with crystal-clear water, the hiking trails through eucalyptus and pine forest, the snorkeling in the coves (bring your own mask). The Fort Royal and its gardens are free to visit. Pack a picnic from Marche Forville. With 18.50 euros for the ferry and 10 euros for picnic provisions, you have a full day on a paradise island for under 30 euros.
