Why Californie

We did not want to be on the Croisette. Too much noise, too many tourists taking selfies in front of the Carlton. We wanted to live in Cannes like the locals do.

The Californie neighborhood sits on the eastern hills of the city. Quiet streets lined with pines and bougainvillea, Belle Epoque villas behind wrought-iron gates, and that late-afternoon light that settles over the bay and makes you want to do nothing at all.

The apartment is on the third floor of a typical Cannes building. We renovated everything: new kitchen, redone bathroom, air conditioning (because in August in Cannes, it is non-negotiable), and fiber wifi for those who need to work between swims.

It is small - 26 square metres, we are not going to pretend otherwise - but every metre is thought through. A real double bed in the bedroom, a sofa bed in the living room, a kitchen where you can actually cook, and the quiet of a residential street where you sleep with the windows open in spring.

Our favourite local spots

Not from a guidebook. The places we actually go to.

🥐

Boulangerie de la Californie

The best croissants in the neighborhood. We go barefoot on Sunday mornings, it is a ritual. Their specialty breads change daily.

3 min walk
🍅

Marche Forville

The real local market. Fruits, vegetables, morning fish, olives, cheeses, flowers. Open every day except Monday (when it becomes a flea market). Get the socca early.

12 min walk
🍝

Da Laura

The best Italian in Cannes, run by Laura Merlo since 1992. Rue du 24 Aout, behind the station. Simple decor, warm atmosphere, generous portions. Book ahead, it is always full.

10 min walk
🧀

Fromagerie Ceneri

Rue Meynadier, three generations of cheesemakers. Impossible to walk past without going in. Get a platter and a baguette, head to the beach for an improvised picnic.

8 min walk
🍷

Aux Bons Enfants

A Cannes institution in Le Suquet. Grandmother's Provencal cooking, no credit cards, no fuss. The place where locals take people they actually like.

14 min walk
🏖

Table 22

In the lanes of Le Suquet, a former Alain Ducasse chef at the helm. Mediterranean cuisine, short menu, impeccable produce. Perfect for a special evening without Croisette prices.

15 min walk
🌴

Plage Zamenhof (public)

You do not pay for the beach. The public beaches between the private ones have the same sand, the same sea, the same view. Our favourite: Zamenhof, in the middle of the Croisette. Arrive before 10am in summer.
